Research Interests
Dr. Rogers' research interests include (1) the development and application of genome-enabled molecular technologies as tools to identify and trace the origin and fate of pollutants in engineered, agricultural, and natural systems; (2) fundamentally understanding and improving management practices and treatment technologies for pollution abatement and remediation; and (3) sustainability of surface and groundwater resources through appropriate development of engineered and agricultural systems. Recent research has centered on rapid detection of water quality indicator organisms, fecal pathogens, and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in surface waters, livestock wastewaters, bioaerosols, and wildlife vectors of disease, tracking the origin of fecal pathogens in polluted waters for watershed management, and evaluation of treatment technologies and landscape controls for mitigation of pathogen release from large-scale animal feedlots and manured crop fields. Other research has involved the development and application of molecular tools for tracking the selective uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by members of the indigenous microbial community in coal-tar impacted soils systems to better quantify natural attenuation processes.
