Special Housing Consideration
Special Housing Consideration
Clarkson University offers a double occupancy Residential Program for freshman and sophomores and a limited number of slots of alternative housing options for juniors and seniors, determined by a housing lottery.
Students requesting special housing consideration must make their requests prior to June 15th for incoming freshman and by mid-February for current students (the date is announced each year based on the academic calendar). Late requests can only be considered on a space available basis.
Students with disabilities and/or medical conditions that require a specific type of housing to ensure good health or equal access to education may request a housing accommodation through the Office of Accommodative Services. Students will need to satisfy certain documentation requirements and will also need the approval of representatives of the Campus Health Center, Campus Dining Services and the Counseling Center, as deemed appropriate by the Director of Accommodative Services. A representative from Residence Life will join with the other representatives for the review of requests.
Requests for special housing consideration for students with disabilities will be evaluated and prioritized based on documented need. Factors to be considered include severity of the condition, timing of the request, feasibility and availability. There is no guarantee that on campus housing will be available. Incoming freshman will be notified of the determination early in July and current students will be notified prior to the Housing Lottery.
Students must meet with the Director of Accommodative Services each year a special housing consideration is being requested, and documentation and needed approvals may need to be updated annually.
Acceptable documentation includes letters records or reports from your psychologist/psychiatrist, doctor, physician assistant or comparable professional. A prescription pad statement of disability is inadequate for ADA eligibility.
Documentation must include:
- diagnosis
- statement of severity, mild moderate severe
- how you are disabled as a result of this condition and
- the specific accommodations needed and why
Students may need to submit a Verification of Physical, Medical or Sensory Disability form and, as relevant, a Request for Medical Housing for Dietary Purposes form as part of the request for special housing consideration.
Please contact the Director of Accommodative Services with any questions or concerns.
